Newsworthy
Kurt Stocks and Heidi Edwards of El Dorado Hills have plead guilty to federal charges of operating illegal gambling operations through their company SweepsCoach. According to the Folsom Times, “the business helped set up and operate internet cafes that offered slot machine-style games under the guise of selling internet time or calling cards.” Sentencing is scheduled for October.
The Folsom Planning Commission voted 6-1 to deny a conditional-use permit for a liquor store in Briggs Ranch. In April, the commission deadlocked 3-3 on the issue, with one commissioner absent. Since then, neighbors started a letter writing campaign with nearly 50 residents sending letters of opposition to the commission. “Concerns include the adjacent park, nearby Folsom Hills Elementary School, a questionable need for another alcohol outlet at the intersection, potential crime and decreased property values,” according to the Folsom Telegraph.
An El Dorado Hills man has been identified as the driver that lost his life in an accident on Folsom Boulevard and Iron Point Road on May 29. Cory Glenn Hakala, 42, was the sole occupant of the vehicle that crashed into a tree around 4:00 PM that day. “He was pronounced dead after life-saving efforts from police and Folsom Fire Department,” according to ABC10.
