Happenings around Folsom and beyond

Here’s a fun? interesting? wacky? creepy? art? display in Old Folsom. I kinda like it. It’s a little quirky, just like me.
Newsworthy
This young Folsomite is amazing. He’s 21-year-old Tyler Pepper and he’s been spreading holiday cheer in Folsom for at least a few years, last year making it snow in his neighborhood, much to the delight of the local kids. This year, Pepper is trying his hand at being the general manager of the ice rink in Historic Folsom and from what it looks like in this ABC10 video, he’s doing a bang-up job. He’s increased the size of the rink, upgraded the chiller, added fireside seating and s’mores and even changed the shape of the rink to accommodate ice hockey events. All while keeping this wonderful Folsom tradition alive for the Old Town businesses and the revelers, alike.
While you’re in Old Folsom enjoying the ice rink, head over to Sutter Street Theater where they’re serving up Neil Simon’s “The Sunshine Boys.” Get your cousin to entertain the little ones at the ice rink while you enjoy the show, because it is rated PG-13. Friday was opening night, but you can catch a show through November 27. Per Village Life “Performances are scheduled at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 4:30 p.m. Sundays and a special performance at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.”
It was quite a scene on Highway 50 at Spring Street in Placerville on Friday as a chase ended with a collision at the intersection. That’s not the half of it, though.
According to this article in the Mt. Democrat, witnesses say they saw police with guns drawn on one of the vehicles. Caltrans reported that the scene had been cleared by 1:45 p.m. An investigation is underway.
Hey! Did you know?
There’s gold in them thar hills! But nobody’s sure where. That’s because Kanaka Jack took the secret to his grave. The Kanaka (Hawaiian) people of El Dorado County were here long before the gold rush, but when the 49ers started their rush, the Kanaka took advantage of the influx of people, selling food to the miners in Coloma. “Kanak Jack” was the last of the people to survive in the area. For decades Jack had worked the Kanaka Jack Mine, along Irish Creek not far from town. The location of the mine was a secret he successfully kept until the day he died. Lots of people are still looking for his gold. It’s out there somewhere! Read his story on the El Dorado County website.
Yesterday, you learned where the chefs eat. Today, I have an article for you on what the Sommeliers have on their table for Thanksgiving. From a crisp Viognier to a deep Zin to something sparkling, these guys have a suggestion for you! And, if beer’s more your style (or that of your guests) don’t worry. They’ve got you covered, too.
